Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) are popular in many schools, but I have found that Professional Learning Networks (PLNs) were also useful for me. edWeb.net is my favorite PLN.
They are a professional network that serves the education community by offering free webinars, presented by educators and education-minded individuals, on timely topics. I consider edWeb to be my personal learning community.
And, when I say communities, that is exactly what I mean. This network organizes their topics under descriptive headings called communities. To date, they have 63 communities. If you affiliate yourself with a community, you will receive notifications when new webinars are scheduled.
One of the first communities I joined was Emerging Tech for Schools and Libraries. This is where I got to know Michele Luhtala, one of the shakers and movers in the library world.
edWeb is worth your while. Check it out. As librarians, we not only look for opportunities to fine tune our skills, but we also look for ideas to share with our colleagues. If the topic is education and students, then we librarians need to be aware of it.
